Hands-On with the Zenith Chronomaster Original Triple Calendar in Lapis Lazuli
Zenith continues its blue legacy with a stunning new interpretation of its triple calendar chronograph. replica watches for sale
It's not every day that we see a new chronograph with a stone dial. Sure, brands like Rolex, Omega, and Bulova have used meteorites, but few seem to truly capitalize on the countless other color and texture variations we see on so many time-only watches.
This year, marking Zenith's 160th anniversary, the brand's Chronomaster Original Triple Calendar (Ref. 03.3400.3610/51.C910) features a lapis lazuli dial. It's an absolutely stunning watch. While this may be the only chronograph currently available with a lapis lazuli dial (and certainly a triple calendar chronograph), the design wasn't created out of thin air. In 2019, Zenith celebrated the 50th anniversary of the El Primero movement by collaborating with Phillips and Bacs & Russo on a unique creation: an A386 watch crafted in platinum and featuring a lapis lazuli dial. It was a stunning way to commemorate the anniversary of one of the most important chronograph movements in history. The watch ultimately sold for CHF 250,000, with the proceeds going to charity. Now, in 2025, lapis lazuli returns to the Chronomaster, continuing the 160th anniversary of Zenith's all-blue color. replica Breitling Superocean
If you're not familiar with the Zenith Chronomaster Original Triple Calendar, it's a faithful recreation of the original 1969 A386 case, measuring 38 mm in diameter, 46 mm between lugs, and 13 mm thick. The 25 prototypes produced at the time indicated that Zenith did plan to release the A386 Triple Calendar with a moon phase, but ultimately only the simpler chronograph version made it to the wrists of the general public. Last year, however, Zenith finally returned to the original prototype look with three Chronomaster Triple Calendars, all featuring a calendar module based on the El Primero Caliber 3610. Later that year, we collaborated with Zenith on another limited edition featuring a monochromatic black dial with meteorite subdials. While I'm biased, it's truly excellent. So excellent that I bought one.
Okay, but I digress. This new lapis lazuli dial takes the same method used for the stone-dial chronographs we saw in the meteorite edition and reverses it. This means more gemstones on the dial, with the main dial cut from a single piece of lapis lazuli, while the subdials are standard snailed metal discs. From a distance, the dial appears a beautiful saturated blue, but up close, the mineral inclusions within the gemstone reveal varying shades of black, silver, and gold, giving it a dynamic appearance and immediately understanding why stone dials are so interesting. And, as expected, each stone dial is different, meaning the dial inclusions and overall appearance will vary from watch to watch. replica Richard Mille
The triple calendar features delicately cut apertures, with the date window at 4:30 and the day, month, and date discs in a deep blue that blends seamlessly. While the day and month cutouts are small against the busy dial, they remain highly legible thanks to the high-contrast white printing. The moon phase cutout blends seamlessly with the chronograph minute dial, with a polished moon and stars perched above a prominent brushed blue disc. Since this is a triple/full calendar, rather than an annual calendar, the day/date must be changed five times a year: once each in February, April, June, September, and November. To change the day and moon phase, use the two recessed pushers on the left side of the case. The date (and month) are adjusted using the crown in its first position. On the wrist, this watch feels just like any other model in the Triple Calendar collection. Based on my experience with the Meteorite model, the case is definitely worth trying in person. A 38mm diameter is typically quite compact, but this case feels different from every other 38mm watch I've owned. From the top, it looks normal, and the 46mm lug spacing is perfectly balanced. But from the side, you'll notice that the lugs are elevated above the case height, the caseback protrudes, and the lug ends don't curve down completely. It's definitely not uncomfortable, but those looking for a 38mm watch that fits their wrist better might want to try this one first.
The Chronomaster Original Triple Calendar Lapis Lazuli is available with either a dark blue strap or a stainless steel bracelet. In my opinion, this watch wears noticeably better on the strap. Not only does it provide more contrast, but the overall wear is also more comfortable (the bracelet's feel is a bit lackluster, even disappointing, especially the clasp). Thankfully, the Chronomaster Original Triple Calendar's strap options are truly a freak, and I can definitely imagine how perfectly this rich blue dial would look with a different strap.
I think it's worth mentioning the unique positioning of this watch in the market: a tenth-of-a-second chronograph with a lapis lazuli dial, a triple calendar, and a moon phase. If this watch meets all your expectations, then I can assure you it's a truly beautiful chronograph, well worth having on your wrist.
