Men and women can try their give at colouring traditional Peranakan tiles along with making bracelets in Chinatown this weekend because Chinatown Business Association (CBA) presents a threat to draw the crowds back to the once bustling location.
Shops and eateries inside the heritage site were hit badly from the dramatic fall in tourist numbers over the past few months amid the Covid-19 pandemic in addition to travel restrictions.
To encourage locals to go to the area, the CBA has organised numerous workshops where visitors will be shown steps to make Chinese knotted bracelets, grow their vegetables and herbs, and also colour Peranakan tiles along with markers.
Booths have been set up in Sago Street to get these activities, with work capped at groups involving five. Other attractions include old-school games including hopscotch and snakes as well as ladders.
CBA executive director Lim Yick Suan said she hoped those things would "increase domestic visitors to Chinatown, strengthening its position as a cultural, heritage-rich hot spot".
She added that Covid-19 preventive measures will be in spot. These include temperature having, safe distancing and recurrent cleaning of workshop applications.
Ms Amelia Tay, 34, is among those keen for holidays the area over the actual weekend, saying that she will be taking her five-year-old daughter, Andrea, to Chinatown that weekend.
"It'll be fun to expose her to the games I used to play since a child and hopefully she will learn something from the workshops, " Ms Tay reported.
These heritage-themed activities form part of a monthly line-up of events in Chinatown.
A series of "wellness workshops" is tentatively slated for next month, where herbal tea tenants will share medical benefits of their cures.
But not everyone is convinced about the efficacy of these occasions.
Mr Lucas Tok, lecturer as well as marketing competency lead in Singapore Polytechnic's Business Classes, said that businesses from the area have to reduce their reliance on traveler dollars and reach out and about instead to locals through e-commerce platforms whenever they hope to survive.
"Places like Tiong Bahru and Keong Saik are able to bring in locals not having losing their rich heritage and they may be seen as a strategy of how Chinatown might evolve, " he stated
The CBA declined to reveal the amount of Chinatown stores have shut since January, or the length of time retail sales have fallen balanced with the same period 2009. But a handful involving street vendors and retailers contacted from the Straits Times said gross sales had plunged by a minimum of 50 per cent because travel restrictions were made.
Ms Jane Yee, 60, a storekeeper at Feng Shui Specialist, said the shop marketing souvenirs and religious paraphernalia in the past 16 years would close inside a month or two.
"We want to cut our losses by selling uncooperative stock at 50 per cent discount, " she reported in Mandarin.
Ms Wang Shan Shan, 36, the waitress at hotpot skewers diner Li Ji Chuan Chuan Xiang, said business had dropped by 50 % when the tourists quit coming.
Mr Mohamad Jahubar, some sort of shop assistant at Victoria Item Centre, which sells handicrafts and also collectibles, said business has fallen by more than 80 per cent considering that February.
He said that wage subsidies on the Government had helped even so the shop owners have needed to dig into their savings to help keep the business going.
