One of these watches is the latest version of the world's thinnest QP ever, the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Automatic Perpetual Calendar Ultra-Thin 41mm. Although it has been beaten since it was first released in 2019, it is still a A powerful watch that looks and handles well, and is one of our favorite AP watches for a variety of reasons.

Although ultra-thin watchmaking is technically not a complication per se, as it does nothing additional to the watch other than reducing its height, we still consider it a complication. Packing as much as possible with as little as possible requires enormous engineering and watchmaking prowess. Of course, this starts with a watch that just tells the time, but the challenge is multiplied when you want to add more than just hours and minutes to a watch. Piaget, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Bvlgari and other brands have always been associated with the art of ultra-thin watchmaking, creating and breaking records in this field time and time again. The history of the Royal Oak is well documented; it has been around for over 50 years and is one of the most sought-after luxury sports watches on the market. It was a huge hit for AP, even though it wasn't that popular initially. Next, the strap shows three correctors for the QP indication; the three on the left represent moon phase, date and day of the week, and the one on the right represents the month and leap year (integrated). The watch comes with a special tool that minimizes the risk of scratching the metal when adjusting functions. The crown screws down and allows the rest of the indications to be set. On the back, the elongated caseback with sapphire crystal showcases the extremely complex and slender movement, but we'll get to that later. Another update can be appreciated on the dial. While the original RD#2 Concept watch on which this Royal Oak QP Ultra-Thin is based has a Grande Tapisserie dial, the 2019 edition and this watch have a smooth blue dial. What changes the look of this all-titanium iteration, though, is the introduction of a blue fumé dial. Personally, I think it's pretty clever, as there's already a lot on the dial, and the iconic square pattern just distracts from the QP display. The base dial has a blue sunburst brushed finish that gradually darkens around the edges. Applied hour markers and hands with luminescent inserts. The dial is dotted with black QP recessed indicators. This starts with the date in a separate sub-dial at 6 o'clock. On the upper left is the display of the day of the week with a semi-integrated day/night indication. In a similar style, you'll find month and leap year indications on the opposite end. All of this thanks to the ingenious caliber 5133, produced in-house and first seen in the 2019 Royal Oak RD#2 Perpetual Calendar Ultra-Thin 26586PT. Due to its structure, it contains 256 components and has a diameter of only 32 mm and a height of 2.89 mm. One of the tricks to achieve this is to distribute the components on a layer, as, for example, Bvlgari (Bulgari) did in its record-breaking Octo Finissimos collection. Redesigning the wheel and aligning everything on the same level helped achieve this incredible slenderness. As early as 2019, two patents were applied for, one for the week wheel and the other for the invented 48-month wheel.

The movement is automatic, which is remarkable considering the overall height. The rotor is skeletonized to reveal as much mechanical movement as possible. It runs at 2.75Hz or 19,800vph and has a 40-hour power reserve. The fit and finish are excellent, and it sits snugly around the wrist thanks to the AP-logoed folding clasp.
